Neurodiverse Characters In My Universe
Little does everyone know, in every show I write, there will be a neurodiverse character. I feel it's important to represent the struggles, challenges and benefits of living with a condition that falls under the category. As someone neurodiverse, I grew up with no decent representation at all and that is very lonely and isolating. Luckily things have progressed enough to have some accuracy but it's still not good enough. There's major inconsistencies at times due to lack of research. I want to change that!
I myself am autistic but I also suffer from severe psychotic symptoms. When people think of psychotic, it gives off bad vibes and that's not always the case. It doesn't mean I'm crazy, it just means my brain doesn't always function the way I wish it would. It gets triggered and I end up with dissociation, delusions and hallucinations. It hurts that when people hear that, they automatically jump to conclusions. I want to show that, I'm not a serial killer or bad connotations associated with the word. I'm still human in my episodes, I still feel things and I'm not scary.
One reason why I love the character of Tiffany Gold is that she is based off my current struggles and not once has someone made her feel bad about it. They're supportive and fully encouraging her to feel comfortable in her surroundings and to trust that it will pass. The story comes from a daydream about how scenarios could be different if someone has the knowledge of severe mental health conditions and disorders to the point they're not gaslit or dismissed for trying their best to access help. It's a heart warming story over all, that gives hope to others in a similar position and when this will be shown on screen, it can definitely help others.
If I saw someone representing my current struggles, I know it would give me hope that things can get better with the right support and help. That's why accurate representation is important, it can be someones saviour.
One thing I've learnt is, be open minded, don't judge. Let someone tell their story and experiences. You may think you know someone but the truth is, you probably only know the surface.
Stay strong xox Lola :)
